The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family navigate their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

ā€œIt feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,ā€ explained Cappa. ā€œIt's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.ā€

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
