During a clear message to the United States, President Vladimir Putin stated to PM Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to maintain “uninterrupted” supplies of oil to India. These remarks came as the two leaders met in New Delhi and affirmed their relationship were “immune to foreign coercion.”

A Message Directed at the Western Countries

The statement, made on Friday, appeared to be a pointed rebuke at the United States and its allies, which have repeatedly attempted to compel New Delhi into curtailing its longstanding links with Moscow. The backdrop follows earlier US actions, notably additional tariffs targeting New Delhi over its purchase of discounted Russian crude.

“Russia is a reliable source of oil and gas and anything needed for the development of India’s industry,” he stated. “Russia is prepared to keep guaranteeing the uninterrupted supply of resources for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, while not naming energy explicitly, supported the focus by stating that “a stable energy base has been a key and vital pillar of the Indo-Russian partnership.”

Challenging American Pressure

Before the summit, during a TV appearance, Putin had challenged American pressure on India's oil imports. He argued, “If the US is entitled to buy our uranium, then why can't India enjoy the identical right?”

This trip represented his maiden trip to India after the onset of the war in Ukraine, and the two nations engaged in a visible effort to display that the personal rapport between the two leaders persisted strongly.

The official release highlighted an agreement on the joint production of sophisticated defence platforms, although direct reference of systems like the Su-57 fighter jet were omitted.
