Israel Gives Green Light to Nineteen Fresh Outposts in Disputed West Bank

Israel's top security body has given its endorsement to the establishment of nineteen new outposts in the occupied Palestinian territories, signaling a sustained campaign for settlement expansion.

Hardline Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who lives in a settlement and advocated for the step alongside Defence Minister Israel Katz, asserted that the move was aimed at preventing the formation of a sovereign Palestine.

Under international law, Jewish communities in the disputed territories are viewed as in violation of international law.

The move has elicited censure from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has commented that Israel's "unceasing" settlement expansion exacerbates frictions, restricts Palestinians' use of territory, and threatens the prospects of a independent Palestine.

Increased Tensions and Diplomatic Repercussions

Violence in the region has escalated since the war in Gaza erupted in October 2023, adding to fears that settlement expansion could solidify Israel's occupation and damage the possibility for a two-state solution.

The two-state solution involves the creation of a State of Palestine in the Palestinian territories, with Jerusalem's eastern sector as its capital, broadly along the borders that existed prior to the 1967 Six-Day Middle East war.

Since taking office in late 2022, the incumbent government in Jerusalem has ramped up the approval of fresh communities and initiated the legalisation process for informal settler outposts, designating them as "extensions" of established communities.

Ongoing Growth

The most recent approval brings the overall count of settlements recognized over the preceding 36 months to 69, per the figures from Smotrich.

These decisions come a short time after the UN reported that settlement expansion had hit its highest level since 2017.

The newest batch of authorizations encompasses the revival of two communities — Ganim and Kadim — which were evacuated about 20 years ago.

In a previous move, the Israeli government approved 22 new settlements in the occupied West Bank - labeled as the biggest wave of approvals in many years.

In a related development, the government also approved blueprints last summer to build more than 3,000 homes in the so-called E1 area between Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim community, a initiative that had been on hold for many years amid intense international objection.

At that time, the Finance Minister stated it would "bury the notion of a Palestinian state."

Demographic Facts and International Response

Roughly seven hundred thousand settlers dwell in about one hundred and sixty settlements in the occupied territories, according to the Israeli monitoring organization Peace Now. This is territory that the Palestinian people seek for a prospective independent state.

This ongoing construction has provoked Arab nations who have steadfastly said it erodes chances for a two-state solution.

It has also fueled concerns about the potential incorporation of the disputed territories.

Ex- American President Donald Trump had previously admonished the Israeli leadership about annexation, telling a publication that Israel would forfeit its backing from the United States if it occurred.

In a policy change, the UK - together with other nations such as Australia and Canada - recognised a State of Palestine, a significant although primarily ceremonial adjustment in foreign policy.

The Israeli government strongly rejected this step, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying that a Palestinian state "is off the table."
