Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
