Cameroon's Minister of the Interior Paul Atanga Nji has declared that political opponent Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over allegations that he instigated "aggressive electoral rallies".

A minimum of 4 demonstrators have been killed during clashes between police and military and protesters since the presidential election on 12 October, with the 92-year-old head of state winning an eighth consecutive term.

Tchiroma Bakary maintains that he won the election, a claim disputed by the governing party, the CPDM.

Forceful measures by police and security officers on protesters have concerned the global community, with the UN, AU and EU calling for moderation.

Minister's Claims

Earlier this week, Nji alleged the opposition figure of organising what he referred to as "unlawful" demonstrations resulting in the fatalities, and also criticised him for declaring victory in the electoral contest.

He added that Tchiroma Bakary's "associates behind an insurrectionary plan" will also face legal action.

Poll Figures

Cameroon's leader, who assumed office in 1982 and is now the world's oldest head of state, won the October 12 presidential election with 53.7% of the vote, compared to just over a third for his opponent, according to the electoral authority.

Challenger's Position

Tchiroma Bakary is has not yet commented to the authorities' move to prosecute him, but he had previously announced that he refused to acknowledge a fraudulent outcome - and that he was not afraid of being arrested.

Following the vote count, he said that gunmen shot on demonstrators assembled near his residence in Garoua, causing the death of at least two individuals.

Inquiry Announced

Recently, the interior minister announced that an investigation would be initiated into clashes prior to and following the declaration of the poll figures.

"During these attacks, some of the individuals involved were killed," he commented, without providing a exact count of protesters who have been fatally injured in the incidents.

Nji added that multiple members of the law enforcement also sustained major harm.

Current Situation

Even though Nji maintained the situation nationwide was now stable, protesters are still demonstrating in various areas of the nation, especially in urban centers, where demonstrators mounted barricades on Tuesday, and ignited rubber on the streets.

Experts warn that the political turmoil could push the country into a governmental instability.
